Frank Huang is a Steinway Artist and Associate Professor of Piano at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has previously served on the faculties of The College of Wooster and The Cleveland Institute of Music.
Praised as a “thoughtful and accomplished performer” by New York Concert Review, Huang has earned international recognition for his artistry and refined musicianship. The Chopin Foundation of the United States (Northwest Chapter) noted that he “plays with authority and panache,” while El Comercio (Peru) commended his Mozart Piano Concerto K.482 for its “utmost sensitivity.” He has performed across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia at venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, St. Martin-in-the-Fields (London), and the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw. His performances have been broadcast internationally, including on Italy’s RaiRadio 3. He has collaborated with artists such as Cho-Liang Lin and musicians from major orchestras including Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles.
A champion of unknown and underrepresented repertoire, Huang is recording the complete solo piano works of Nikolai Medtner in a nine-disc project. Recent releases have been praised as “authoritative” (Textura), with Gramophone noting that “Huang and Medtner are made for one another.” His recordings on Centaur, Nimbus Alliance, and Blue Griffin include chamber works by living women composers, a solo Brahms album, and music by Jack Gallagher. Critics have described his playing as “thrilling” (The Classical Reviewer) and “sparkling and sensitive” (Fanfare). He has also performed works by Mark Applebaum, Augusta Read Thomas, Lera Auerbach, and Jennifer Higdon.
Dedicated to teaching, Dr. Huang has contributed articles to Pianist, Gramophone, and International Piano, and produced tutorial videos for G. Henle Verlag’s Urtext Score Reader app.
A Seattle native, Huang studied at The Juilliard School and The Cleveland Institute of Music. He lives in Cincinnati with his wife, Cindy Chang, their son Andres, and their golden retriever, Theo.
